What every devotee should know about Karthik Month

These are the things every devotee should know about Karthik Month.

The month of Karthik is named after Kartikeya, the son of Parvati and Shiva. He also known as Murugan, the brother of Ganesha.

Kartikeya is also known as the demigod of war. In Bhagavad-gita 10.24, Lord Krishna says: “Of priests, Oh Arjuna, know Me to be the chief, Brihaspati. Of generals I am Kartikeya.”

Masa means lunar month. In the Hindu calendar the period of Karthik is known as Karthik Masa.

In the Gaurabda, or Vaisnava calendar the month of Karthik is known as Damodar Masa and celebrates the pastime of Lord Krishna allowing his mother, Yashoda, to tie him around the belly with a rope. Dama meaning “rope” and Udara meaning “belly”.

Gaurabda is the name of the Vaisnava calendar based on Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s appearance year. Lord Caitanya is also known as Gaura because of His beautiful golden complexion. So the calendar based on this Golden Incarnation of Krishna is called Gaurabda.

The years in Gaurabda calendar are counted from the appearance day of Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
