What will you pray for?

What should I pray for

Depending our position we will be compelled to pray for particular things

Those mature in their spiritual practice pray to glorify Krishna, His name, His fame, His past times and His qualities

We may also pray to Krishna asking Lord Krishna to engage us in His devotional service.

It is an acceptable practice to pray for the spiritual benefit of others, that they may become self realised or otherwise come to know Krishna. We may pray when others are ill, or when they are experiencing difficulty.

Some of us may pray to fulfill our material desires. Srila Prabhupada mentions this in his purport to Bhagavad-gita chapter nine, verse 24:

“If, however, anyone has any material desire to be fulfilled, he had better pray for it to the Supreme Lord (although that is not pure devotion), and he will thus achieve the desired result.” Srila Prabhupada says it is is better that we approach Krishna rather than we approach the demigods.

In the book Raja Vidya Srila Prabhupada says “In the execution of devotional service one has to submit to Krishna whatever distress or confidential problem he has.”

In the beginning of of our spiritual practice we will pray for things. This is a natural position, like that of a child who goes to its parents for its every need. This is the initial approach of the spirit soul on its journey back to godhead.

When we develop some insight or get some purification we will become aware of our situation and, realising this, we will pray to the Lord to get us out of here.

When become further purified we realise our actual position as servants, and we will pray to be engaged in that service.

When we realise the power of prayer we will pray for others, that they may realise who they are, who krishna is, and that they might begin to realise the eternal truth.

We might pray to become more serious in our practice, we may pray to read and better understand Srila Prabhupada’s books. We may pray for association, we may pray for other devotees.

We should pray for our Guru, we should pray before chanting, we should pray on rising and before sleeping. Devotees should be people of prayer.

What will you pray for.
